The pluses and the minuses of getting older ( a humorous chat )

The pluses and the minuses of getting older ( a humorous chat )

Getting older has its connotations, especially for women, men seem to often get better with age just look at David Beckham. Where as women are often pulled apart in the media for looking a bit rough, once they reach a certain age, but there are some fabulous women out there who are proof we don't turn into dusty old ladies after 35 and can still look and feel amazing. Tess Daly (49), Duchess of Cambridge (36), Meghan Markle (36), Victoria Beckham (44), Amal Clooney (40) to name but a few.

So let's talk about the positives of getting older

  1. I give less of a shit about what other people think about me.
  2. I wear what I like rather than what I think I should like, and I  dress better for it, no more getting something just because it's in the new in section that will certainly make me look like a potato.
  3. I dress for the weather, no more freezing my tits off, because a jacket doesn't go with my look.
  4. I do not hang out with people who make me feel bad about myself just because they are popular.
  5. I definitely have better taste in men, haha my husband will be pleased with that one!!!
  6. I have learnt to embrace my flaws, so what I am a bit chubbier than I used to be, so what I have stretch marks, I am what I am.

The not so good things

  1. My number one worst thing for me about getting older, is how much money I have to now spend at the hairdressers, this girl is not ready for white hair just yet!!
  2. Sticking with hair, when you get older hair starts to grow from places it shouldn't and tweezers become your best friend.
  3. Skincare becomes a way to important part of the day, got to keep that complexion from looking haggard.
  4. I cannot eat like I could when I was younger, I used to be able to eat crap all day and not put on weight but that unfortunately is not the case now.
  5. Feeling tired by 10pm, I couldn't do the late nights like I used to.
  6. Sticking on the theme of going out, hangovers become a thousand times worse when you are older!!!

I you enjoyed this tongue in cheek post about getting older, let me know in the comments.

May beauty favourites

We are rolling around to the end of yet another month, May for me has been a mixed bag, the low being a car accident the highs my new job, 2 bank holiday weekends blest with sunshine and the Royal wedding of course. The weather has been kind to us this month and I think my beauty favourites reflect the positive change in weather.

May beauty favourites

So let's get on with May's beauty favourites, first up I'm gonna mention that gradual tan again from Hempz*, I know I've talked about it loads and I think it may of featured in possibly three blog posts, but that is because I genuinely love this product. It adds a gradual tan, while moisterising and protecting your skin and smells great to boot. I'll pop the link to the full review blog post at the bottom if you want to check that out.

When it comes to warmer weather my combination skin can get a little oilier, so I have switched up my skincare accordingly, using this Biore oil control scrub with my magnitone every morning, I love to use a scrub in the morning as like to feel the buffed up clean feeling to my skin and I have found this works well at leaving my skin feeling super fresh, I have heard good things about some new products in the Biore range, if you have any recommendations hit me up in the comments.

May beauty favourites

Scent wise every Spring/Summer I seem to gravitate to the Vera way Princess range my favourite being hippie princess, I think it's quite hard to get hold of now but if you can snap it up, it is lush a mix of fruity, floral and vanilla.

Now it is officially sandal weather we have to make sure are tootsies are looking their best, I always have my toes painted regardless of weather and a favourite of mine all year round is Barry m, I love the range of colours the quality and the quick drying my top choice for my toes is always dark this shade is dragster a dark grey.

When it comes to my face I like my makeup to be light and glowy in the warmer weather and for me that involves going back to an old favourite The balms mary lou manizer, I love this highlight and always go back to it time and time again.

Yellow the colour of Summer

I have recently been talking a lot about pushing the barriers of my comfort zone, wearing different pieces to what I would normally choose, and I must admit trousers have really started to win me over, ultimately more comfortable than jeans and come in an assortment of colours. What a colour this pair are, mustard yellow really is the epitome of Summer and surprisingly easy to wear.
White looks so fresh with yellow, but black and grey also work well and let the trousers do the talking.

This Primark pair are the perfect way to delve into coloured trousers, costing just £8, and for me are the perfect length, being only 5ft2 most cropped trousers are not cropped but these are perfect for us more vertically challenged girls.

Not only is the colour perfect for Summer, the trousers themselves are cool and lightweight and with the stretchy waist are perfect for bbq's and one to many hot dogs.

My must have Summer accessories

I am all about the accessory, they make it so easy and often inexpensive to jazz up any outfit, especially if your basic uniform is jeans and a t-shirt the right accessories can take you look from boring to popping in a blink of an eye, for a lazy dresser like me this is a win win.

Must have summer accessories

A new but favourite addition to my accessory wardrobe, is a hair scarf. These babies are a lifesaver, and can be worn in several ways to hide a plethora of bad hair days, from roots, to needing a trim to just needing to wash your hair! use it as a hair band and tie it at the back, wrap around a ponytail or bun, whatever you do it will make your hair look like you bothered to style it rather than you got out of bed half hour ago. I picked mine up in Primark for £2.50 and it was money well spent.

Must have summer accessories

I've mentioned my bag of the Summer before but a woven or basket bag is a must have for your Summer outfits. They just scream Summer to me and look fabulous with any summer outfit for during the day or an evening out. Go for a traditional basket, a circular cross body or box bag shape, whichever you choose you will be bang on trend, and totally "fashion" darling!

Gold jewellery is everywhere right now and looks great in summer, whether its layered necklaces or gold hoops. I'm a massive fan of 90's style big hoops and you do not have to spend a fortune, all the highstreet stores have them, you only need to spend a couple of quid to look bling!!!

The one thing in Summer I simply cannot live without are sunglasses, I whip a pair of sunnies out at the first sight of sun, I have a tonne of pairs, but when you can pick them up for under £5 on the highstreet why not, in fact many of my favourite pairs cost £1 or £2 in Primark. So if you pick up a style you are not sure about or a pair just for a photo for the gram does it matter?

My must have Summer accessories

When it comes to footwear, we only get a few months a year when we can get out feet out. So get those feet buffed and your toes painted and prepare to rock some sandals for Summer. What you go for is up to you and your style, but whether you go for simple black or tan or something a bit brighter or even a bit of leopard print, sandals are the perfect summer shoe.

L'oreal Paris pure clay bright face mask

Hands up if you love a face mask, I think I can speak for most of us, when I say no skincare routine is the same without a face mask thrown in at least on a weekly basis.

L'oreal Paris pure clay bright face mask

L'oreal paris pure clay bright face mask

For the longest time I have loved a clay mask, I think they just work for me,  I have tried a few from the L'oreal pure clay range, but when a few weeks back I saw this new yellow one, I was like Oooo a yellow clay mask, I must try that immediately, because I love trying out something new or a bit different.

L'Oreal-Paris-Pure-Clay-Bright-Face-Mask  as you may of guessed from the name is a brightening mask, with not just clay, but also Yuzu lemon extract to brighten and even out skin. What I love about the L'oreal clay masks is you get a lot of product for your money, so you could buy 2 or 3 different masks to use for different concerns and they would last yonks. But onto this brightening one, first up its yellow which is a bit different, it applies really easily I use an old makeup brush to paint it on, it's not messy and doesn't get everywhere when applied, you can easily get on with something else in the 10 minutes it's on for. It also feels nice on the skin not drying or tightening and smells slightly of lemon but nothing overpowering. When it comes to removing I use warm water and a muslin cloth, and it rinses away pretty easily.

But what about your face Kate?

Well my face feels pretty damn lovely thank you, plus it makes me look glowy and fresh faced, what more can you ask from a ten minute treatment than to feel like you have a new, brighter, fresher complexion?

Pushing the barriers of my comfort zone

This year I have made a conscience decision to push the barriers of my comfort zone, in all areas of my life including how I dress. Suffering with anxiety often means I stay safe in my choices, not wanting to do things that I am uncertain of, do things a way I haven't before or just do something new, BUT I am working on that, taking small steps, never giving myself to big a challenge, where I would be set up to fail, instead congratulating myself on all achievements however small.

For me certain items of clothing are safe, people won't notice me wearing this, I won't draw attention to myself, people won't think I don't suit this, or am to old or the wrong body shape. That item for me is jeans. They are my comfort blanket, and probably always will be, but I am starting to try new things, I've branched into trousers and now this cute spotty skirt. In order to make this "safe" I toned down the girlieness with a band T-shirt, vans and a denim jacket. That's because I've never identified with being particularly girlie, and If I was to wear a girly outfit, I feel awkward like I would attract comments, probably not true, in reality I'm sure most people do not give a shit what I wear but the brain is a powerful thing.

Maybe one day I will get braver how I wear trousers and skirts, but for now small steps.

Birthday Wishlist

As I type this post it is 4 weeks until my birthday, I am by know means in any hurry to be a year older, but of course I am excited for the possibility of gifts. To be honest I think I deserve to be spoilt this year, I was involved in a car accident earlier this month, meaning I rightly need presents to help me get over the trauma, well that's the story I'm going for......hahaha

Trousers topshop, Trainers JD, Yellow top Topshop, white top Newlook, lip crayon Fabled, Pixi set cult beauty
I have gone for a classic mix of fashion and beauty, with a new lipstick top of my list, I literally cannot remember when I last had a new lipstick, I know it's a sad tale!  I am in love with the shade Red square from Nars, and really hope I receive it on my birthday.
Sticking with beauty I have wanted to try Pixi for the longest time and this set looked like a good way to give them a whirl.

Oooo Fashion my true love, this year I am trying to push the barriers of my comfort zone and have branched out into wearing more trousers and those Topshop ones are to die for. Of course there is always room for new tops and for Summer you can't go wrong with classic white, and I'm being drawn to yellow so I'm gonna go with it.

Lastly it wouldn't be a wishlist of mine if it didn't contain some footwear, my guilty pleasure, I have an obscene amount of shoes, but that doesn't stop me ogling new trainers and these ones look so retro and mores to the point ridiculously comfy.

I will of course keep you up to date on whether I have been a good girl and what gifts I get for my birthday.

If I could do my wedding day over

Wedding season is well and truly upon us, up and down the country couples are preparing for there big day. Brides are panicking about fitting into there dress and seating plans, grooms and best men are frantically writing and rewriting witty anecdotes for the speeches. Mothers are on the hunt for the perfect outfit, and guests are planning transport and hotel stays, while trying to select a gift off the gift list.

Your wedding day is for sure one of the happiest days of your life, well at least I would hope so, but it can be a stressful time, with lots of things to worry about. Like remembering not to put Auntie Jean on the same table as Dad's friend Pete after that " incident " a few years back. That cousin Paul's wife can't eat something or other you can't remember what though, and waking up in the night worried you have forgotten to book a photographer, or the hairdresser or the whole wedding venue. My advice would be to write lists, lists will be your best friend, lists of to do jobs, lists of guests, lists of seating arrangements and lists of things you can immediately cross off the list, I can't be the only one who writes something they have already done on the list just so they can have the satisfaction of crossing it off.

Now I as you may know am happily married. I had a really lovely intimate ceremony with close family and a small reception again with only close family and friends, but what would I do, if I could do it all again?  If I had a bigger budget, well my dream, would be a Bijou weddings venue, maybe a country home or barn, you know the sort of place with beams and open fire places, set in pretty grounds. Somewhere where all my loved ones could come together to celebrate our special day in style, where every detail was taken care of for me. From a beautiful setting for the ceremony to pretty grounds for photographs, now that would be what I call a dream wedding.

https://bijouweddingvenues.co.uk/cain-manor-wedding-venue-surrey/about-the-venue

Of course in this dream wedding scenario I would have the dress that dreams are made of, something that made feel amazing like a princess, not like one of those old fashioned loo roll covers!! my best friend as my bridesmaid and my boys looking handsome in well cut suits, and of course a sexy honeymoon booked somewhere where the sea is clear blue and cocktails are always available...... I can dream right?

One thing I wouldn't change for the world though if I could redo it all again would be my boys being our witnesses and giving me away, that for me made the day perfect, I couldn't of been more proud of the young men they had become, the wedding not only cemented mine and my husbands relationship but that of his place in our family, for me, that day our family unit was complete. This will always be the most precious memory for me.

What would be your dream wedding? I would love to know.

My Summer pamper routine

If you follow me on Instagram you may of seen I was in a car accident earlier this week, and although luckily I wasn't physically hurt, the shock has took its toll emotionally, along with worrying about what's gonna happen with my car, will the other driver admit liability ect ect my anxiety has been through the roof. So I thought to myself Kate, you need to take care of yourself and try to relax and what better way to relax then with a nice pamper session, I thought why not share with you guys what I like to do and what products I use.

Summer pamper routine

I know many people associate a bath with a pamper sesh, but I'm not really a bath person, I prefer a long hot shower to get me relaxed and feeling fresh. And what's a pamper session without a face mask,  just not a pamper session. My mask of choice is currently L'oreal's pure clay mask bright, I love L'oreal's clay masks but I have only recently tried the bright one, I really like it, plus its yellow so very summery haha!!

Summer pamper routine

To give my skin a treat I also like slather on some nice body lotion, I'm currently using a gradual tan lotion from Hempz*, that not only moisturises my skin, smells lush, it builds into a gradual tan, perfect for Summer.

In Summer especially I take that bit extra care of my tootsies, no one wants to see manky feet in sandals. So I start with giving them a good buff up to remove the dreaded hard skin, I find Scholl velvet pedi a lifesaver this time of the year and boy is it satisfying removing all that gross skin. Obviously after my feet have been buffed to perfection I like to whack on some Soap & Glory heel genius, everyone knows how good this stuff is and I for one am never without a tube.

Lastly a freshen up of my toe and fingernails, I tend to go for dark on my toes like Barry M speedy in dragstar and something bright on my fingers I love Port a loo blue from Rimmel, I always go for quick drying as I HATE waiting.

I hope this has inspired to you to have a little pamper session of your own, you deserve it............

Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid serum from Nutrient Wise review

I am a self confessed skincare addict, testing out new products and seeing if the claims are true, is for me one of the great perks of being a blogger. Serums are a hot topic at the moment in the world of skincare, along with acids and they make some big claims, often having pretty hefty price tags to match the claims.

Vitamin C + Hyaluronic acid serum from Nutrient Wise review

Nutrient Wise also make big claims but in there case the price tag is reasonable, plus you can handily order it from Amazon on Prime for free next day delivery, which is always nice, I hate waiting for orders to arrive.

So what is Nutrient Wise vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid serum, well to start with it's a cruelty free product made with top quality natural ingredients, including rose water, vitamins, hyaluronic acid and collagen. What does it do I hear you ask.........?

Well for me it has really helped zap pesky spots, reducing them in size and drying them out after only 1 or 2 applications, depending on the spot. It also makes my skin feel really smooth and glowy and has helped a dark uneven patch of skin to fade, and I have only been using it 2 weeks, so I am pretty impressed and intrigued as to what further use my provide.

Nutrient Wise claims to not just help with acne, but also reduce scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, plump and hydrate. It's also a good base for makeup and can be used either morning or night or both as I have been doing. I can be applied straight to a problem area, or simply massage into your face.

Vitamin C + Hyaluronic acid serum from Nutrient Wise review

If you are intrigued by serums and acids and would like to try them Nutrient Wise is as good as place as any to start in my opinion.

* Nutrient Wise kindly gifted me this product to try but all opinions are my own.
